Hobbiton!

On the last full day of our trip, we headed out from Tauranga (in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island in New Zealand) to the movie set where Peter Jackson thought best represented where the Hobbits lived in Middle-earth as described by Tolkien.  If you’re into this sort of stuff, it’s just surreal how they have kept it all so…..real.  Off to Aukland tonight, and then tomorrow night back to the U.S..

South Island

It is difficult to travel around the east side of South Island in New Zealand and not marvel at all the incredible vistas.  Here are a few from the last three days.

Near Port Chalmers (Denedin), on the Otago Peninsula at Taiaroa.  Here I saw my first penguin in the wild (Yellow-eyed) and later the breeding grounds for Southern Royal Albatross (the only place in the world where an albatross breeds on a ‘mainland’ (instead of an island):

Yesterday, from the town of Timaru, we headed up to South Island high country and the Southern Alps.  This photo of the Rangita River is near where scenes from 'Lord of the Rings’ was filmed:

On arrival at Erewhon Station, a 35,000 acre farm, we took a Clydesdale carriage ride through the spectacular property:

And today, the town of Akaroa was our port of call, and from there we went back up to the high country. Incredible vistas throughout the day:

The highlight of the day was zipping along the Waimakariri River in a jet boat; I need to uploading separately so it will be on the next post!

Ulva Island

Yesterday we visited Ulva Island, near Oban and Stewart Island, the southernmost inhabited island of the New Zealand archipelago.  Our bird guide Matt helped us find most of the birds that breed on the island, including rarities like the Stewart Island Shag (both phases), Kaka, Weka, Yellowhead, South Island Saddleback and South Island Robin.  Heading out early evening toward the east side of the South Island toward Dunedin, you can see why New Zealand is called the Albatross capital of the world.  More on this later, but already have seen five species of albatross!  Amazing amount of pelagic birds!image

For whatever reason, my Tumblr blog will not upload my panoramic photos taken on my iPhone, they’ll be posted on my FB page.

Celebrating with M1

Celebrating 40th Anniversary of WTS International with founder and my first boss Gary Henkin, affectionately called ‘M1’ (as in my first mentor, not to be confused with Ken Werner/M2 - I’ve been blessed to have maintained really good friendships and mentorships with former bosses throughout my life), this past week at Cafe Monte Carlo (great food) in Bethesda, Maryland. I left UVA twice to work for Gary.

Photos from last night at the White House (including being serenaded by the University of Wisconsin Mad Hatters who just happened to be performing this particular evening, and a photo of President Obama speaking, while we are surrounded by Congressman Patrick Kennedy and Garrison Keillor (back of heads in photo) and to my left Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and to our left race car driver Jeff Gordon and his family):

Is Science Making a Comeback with Team Red?

Wow, did Pat Robertson really debunk classic creationist thought this past Tuesday on his ‘700 Club’ broadcast?
Here’s what he said:
“Look, I know that people will probably try to lynch me when I say this, but Bishop [James] Ussher wasn’t inspired by the Lord when he said that it all took 6,000 years. It just didn’t. You go back in time, you’ve got radiocarbon dating. You got all these things and you’ve got the carcasses of dinosaurs frozen in time out in the Dakotas.

They’re out there. So, there was a time when these giant reptiles were on the Earth and it was before the time of the Bible. So, don’t try and cover it up and make like everything was 6,000 years. That’s not the Bible.

"If you fight science,” he continued, “you’re going to lose your children, and I believe in telling it the way it was.”

Whoa, can you believe this?  Sure seems like Red Team is in a tailspin!  Wow, maybe acknowledging the science of global warming is next?

A Test of Who You Really Are

If you have been on the Benghazi Bandwagon these past few weeks, convinced that there was a coverup and that Susan Rice should be pilloried or worse, then you have been tested.  And you have failed.  You have allowed yourself to shamelessly capitalize on a tragedy where lives were sadly lost.  Your hatred of President Obama has overtaken your ability to think straight, and you are now but a puppet of Fox News.

Here’s what we know (CBS News):

1.  It was the Office of the Director of National Intelligence that took the words “al Qaeda” and “terrorism” out of Rice’s talking points for those Sept. 16 talk shows.

2.  Both the CIA and the FBI approved of these edits, following standard operating procedure.

3. “The White House or State Department did not make those changes.”

Still influenced by the Kool-Aid?  About a little history lesson, something you would never get on Fox, because that involves some degree of concentration and thought (sent to me from my friend Bob):

In 2002, the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, was attacked, and 10 people were killed. In 2004, the U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan was attacked, and two were killed; also that year, the U.S. Consulate in Saudi Arabia was stormed, and eight died. In 2006, armed men attacked the U.S. Embassy in Syria, and one person was murdered. In 2007, a grenade was thrown at the U.S. Embassy in Athens. In 2008, the U.S. Embassy in Serbia was set on fire; that same year, bombings in the U.S. Embassy in Yemen killed 10 people.

Where was the indignation and outrage and national outcry over these incidents? The only difference in the current situation would appear to be that this time around we have a party of bad losers who have leaped on politicizing the event as part of their general obstructionism.

Another way of looking at the complete John McCain/Lindsay Graham hypocrisy of all this, courtesy of Jon Stewart (A Different Rice).

Much to be thankful for...

Thanksgiving Dinner at Hay Adams Hotel, with incredible views of The White House and monuments:

Software Ninjas are Golden

In one of my books I’ve written about how the Internet has had the incredible effect of cheapening creativity (Jeff’s book).  To that point, this terrific article in the New York Times offers a very candid, personal account of how near impossible it is to make money developing mobile apps (NYT Article).

To his credit, the guy featured in the article who made a million bucks with a gaming app in the early days of the app gold rush (aka right place, right time, which is fine, but that’s what it was), is the first to say that things have changed dramatically.  Ain’t so easy anymore.  In fact, it’s near impossible.  This is what the Long Tail is all about.

A quick thought about software developers: while they are all over the place, the really incredibly talented and smart ones - what I refer to as software ninjas - are very, very hard to find.  They are a special breed, and they are golden. There is a HUGE difference between the majority of coders who love to go to school on your nickel (another point made in my book) and the super-smart guys who can build an app that is incredible and can be a breakout.  It’s now a very, very, very hard thing to do.
