It is difficult to travel around the east side of South Island in New Zealand and not marvel at all the incredible vistas. Here are a few from the last three days.
Near Port Chalmers (Denedin), on the Otago Peninsula at Taiaroa. Here I saw my first penguin in the wild (Yellow-eyed) and later the breeding grounds for Southern Royal Albatross (the only place in the world where an albatross breeds on a ‘mainland’ (instead of an island):
Yesterday, from the town of Timaru, we headed up to South Island high country and the Southern Alps. This photo of the Rangita River is near where scenes from 'Lord of the Rings’ was filmed:
On arrival at Erewhon Station, a 35,000 acre farm, we took a Clydesdale carriage ride through the spectacular property:
And today, the town of Akaroa was our port of call, and from there we went back up to the high country. Incredible vistas throughout the day:
The highlight of the day was zipping along the Waimakariri River in a jet boat; I need to uploading separately so it will be on the next post!
